 iOS Sharing

iOS has an advanced (and dysfunctional) sharing system. iThoughts integrates with the sharing system in 2 ways.

  • iThoughts registers with iOS as an application that can accept ANY type of file. This means the Files app will present an ‘Open in iThoughts’ option when you choose to Share a file. This will result in the file being sent to iThoughts - which will then either import the file (as a new map) or it will place the file on the clipboard so that you can subsequently paste it into a topic. Historically this was the original and only way of sharing.

  • iThoughts now integrates with the iOS Sharing system so that selected text/images/links/files can be Shared to iThoughts. That information is placed into the Quick Thoughts map within iThoughts. The Quick Thoughts map is intended as a ‘holding map’ where random information is stored until you’re ready to cut/paste it into more appropriate maps.

What makes this confusing is that some apps (e.g. Files app) offer both options when attempting to Share a file (one is presented as ‘iThoughts’ and the other ‘Open in iThoughts’.) Then to confuse matters further, some apps present ‘iThoughts’ and ‘Copy to iThoughts’ as the options. The option you want (probably) is the simple ‘iThoughts’ option.

See below for the sharing process in the Files app:

If you do share a file with iThoughts (into the QuickThoughts map) then you will see it as a topic attachment. You can then tap on the attachment and choose the ‘Import’ option if the file is something that iThoughts can import (for example another mindmap file format.)

Sharing selected text/images/links etc tends to work ok (and only offer the iThoughts option - which will place it in the QuickThoughts map)
