[UPDATE] This issue now affects all languages with iOS15. The feature has now been removed from the app. To control the cursor position, press and hold the onscreen toolbar and it’ll turn into a trackpad to move the cursor.

Flashback (crash) when entering Chinese/Japanese text

There is an iOS13 issue that causes iThoughts to crash under certain circumstances. It tends to affect Chinese users but I have had the the odd case reported from Japanese users too. The circumstances are as follows:

  • iPadOS (v13)

  • External keyboard

  • iThoughts in split view with another app.

  • Chinese/Japanese keyboard configured.

The workaround is to disable the the small toolbar that appears above the onscreen keyboard (the one with the cursor move buttons on the left and the A button on the right.)

You can disable this in the iThoughts section of the System Settings app (set Keyboard Tools = OFF) This should have been disabled automatically in the latest update - so you probably re-enabled it without realising the impact.

This is logged with Apple - but I wouldn’t hold your breath - they seem to have a lot of other issues with iOS13 and Catalina.

PS: If this issue isn’t affecting you then you can re-enable the keyboard toolbar (in the System Settings)
